Since Nov. 1, 2023, I have taken up the following positions: the Lai Ho and Wu Cho-liu Endowed Chair in Taiwan Studies, Professor of East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies, and Director of the Center for Taiwan Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
I am a historian, amateur pianist, and associate professor at the University of California, Davis, where I teach in the History Department and am affiliated with the Critical Theory, Cultural Studies, East Asian Studies, Feminist Theory & Research, and Science & Technology Studies programs on campus. I received my Ph.D. in the History of Science Program at Princeton University.
My work is concerned with the history of systems of thought, spanning from the social life of sexual concepts to the transcultural foundations of psychoanalysis and racial science. As the Founding Chair (2019–2022) of the Society of Sinophone Studies, I utilize new paradigms of global inquiry to rethink the conventions of historiography.
I am the author and editor of a dozen books. After Eunuchs: Science, Medicine, and the Transformation of Sex in Modern China (2018) received the International Convention of Asia Scholars Humanities Book Prize and the Bonnie and Vern L. Bullough Book Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality. Transtopia in the Sinophone Pacific (2021), a Lambda Literary Award Nominee and Winner of the Bullough Book Award and the Alan Bray Memorial Book Award Honorable Mention from the Modern Language Association, enriches the geopolitical histories of transness. I also served as the Editor-in-Chief of The Global Encyclopedia of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) History (2019), which earned the 2020 Dartmouth Medal from the American Library Association. Grants and fellowships from Academia Sinica, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation, the Institute for Advanced Study, the National Humanities Center, the Tang Prize Foundation, and the Wellcome Trust have funded my research.
